Development Director – Position Summary
The Development Director (DD) is responsible for providing executive-level fund-raising and development leadership to Green For All (G4A). The DD is a senior level yet hands-on position responsible for overseeing the development of a multimillion dollar annual budget. (Anticipated 2009 Budget will be $7-10 million.) The DD will direct a major donor campaign, and will build and lead a skilled and passionate Development Team to broaden G4A’s donor base with grassroots and corporate giving; expand Green For All’s income from high-level foundations; pioneer innovative earned income streams; and develop integrated, actionable development plans and campaigns that utilize online and offline technologies to resource G4A’s mission to end both poverty and pollution at the same time.
The successful candidate will be a visionary who believes that effecting social change in our increasingly-web-connected culture involves engaging individuals, organizations, and online networks. The DD will work closely with the Communications and Marketing Team to integrate online technology into Green For All’s immediate development plan and long-term development strategy. The DD will also bring strong cross-functional capacity to leverage the increasing public presence of Green For All to both broaden our donor base and increase our annual income.
The DD will oversee Green For All’s fundraising and development work, building creative strategies and effective operational systems to strengthen and diversify G4A’s income and donor base, and cultivating Development Advisors to support income and donor development.
The DD will serve as a trusted counselor to G4A’s President, and be knowledgeable as a development resource throughout the organization. This position requires someone whose passion for Green For All’s vision is matched with proven experience, strategic acumen and creative, motivational leadership.
Reporting Relationships
The Development Director will work directly with G4A’s founding and current President, Van Jones, and will serve as a member of the G4A’s senior management team. The professional in this role will report to the Managing Director, and will forge key relationships within the organization with directors in the Communications and Marketing Team and the Program and Policy Team.
Other important relationships for this position include external consultants; G4A Board members, and individuals involved in the G4A’s partner organizations; foundation, corporate and government representatives; and vendors relevant to the work of the development functions.
Primary Responsibilities
Strategy
- Develop and manage the implementation of a comprehensive fundraising strategy in the areas of major donors, foundation relations, and corporate and individual giving, working in collaboration with staff, Development Advisors, and fundraising consultants.
- Analyze and forecast G4A’s fundraising potential for use in organizational financial planning.
- Create, guide and supervise the implementation of an annual fundraising plan and calendar, as well as yearly updating a five-year fundraising plan.
- Fashion and implement a variety of communications strategies to support development and fundraising initiatives, including donor solicitation materials and an annual report.
- Create a long-term strategic plan which includes the development and marketing of a planned giving program.
- Identify fundraising opportunities and develop strategies to take advantage of them.
Fundraising and Donor Relations
- Cultivate, solicit, and steward a caseload of prospective major donors and make foundation visits, as needed.
- Leverage and coordinate the cultivation and solicitation efforts of the President and the Development Advisors;
- Oversee development of an annual membership program including direct mail, monthly giving, online and other campaigns with the goal of long term sustainable growth;
- Oversee special events produced by Development Team staff (i.e. annual dinner, donor cultivation events, and other events managed by outside sources);
- Work with the Foundations Manager to develop high-end, multi-year grant strategies; oversee foundation solicitation and grant administration;
- Work with key staff to solicit funds, in-kind gifts and the donation of proceeds from the socially responsible business sector;
- Maintain a thorough and current knowledge of G4A’s programs, campaign successes and strategies.
- Oversee best practices and ensure excellent customer service to all donors.
Management and Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Build and lead a talented, experienced staff
- Develop and manage development budget, including events, outreach, cultivation and solicitation, personnel and operations.
- Work closely with the Program/Policy Team and the Communications and Marketing Team to develop and lead a comprehensive development strategy to engage all potential donors in resourcing Green For All’s mission.
- Work collaboratively with Communications and Marketing Team to create online and offline communications strategies to support development goals.
- Work collaboratively with Program/Policy Team to engage G4A’s grassroots, government and corporate contacts in G4A’s development strategy.
Administration and Reporting
- Manage effective list building for income growth. Work with the Internet Director as well as Program and Operations staff to synchronize data collection to maximize departmental efficiency.
- Monitor, record, analyze, and report on fundraising results.
- Attend relevant organizational planning, program, and strategy meetings and report back to the department on a timely basis.
- Ensure that all administrative requirements for funders, such as state registrations and audit reports, are completed in a timely fashion.
Professional Requirements
The ideal DD candidate has proven experience in all avenues of financial development, with demonstrated skills in raising individual and institutional funds from a breadth of sources, including prominent opinion, philanthropic, and business leaders. Critical to the success of this position will be the DD’s effective and flexible communication skills due to the diversity of G4A’s constituencies. The ideal candidate will promote a shared voice and understanding of G4A’s mission and work, and be a distinguished spokesperson for the organization. The DD will have overall responsibility for raising the financial resources -- as well as profile – for Green For All to deliver on its mission and strategy.
The ideal candidate for the Development Director at G4A will be a seasoned, intelligent, mission-driven and goal-focused professional with executive level leadership experience in a development capacity, preferably within a high-visibility, influential, advocacy environment. Specific professional requirements include the following:
- Seven or more years of development experience with individual and institutional donors;
- Strong background in Foundation relations and track record of securing multi-year, multimillion dollar grants.
- Experience in identification, cultivation, and solicitation of major gifts in the $5,000 to $50,000+ range; Significant experience working effectively with high-net worth individuals
- Experience employing metrics and methods to establish goal markers and quantify the success of broad and targeted development plans, programs and campaigns within designated timeframes.
- Proven ability in developing, maintaining, and building relationships both internally and externally. An extensive network of contacts.
- Seven years of progressively responsible management experience leading, motivating and mentoring a team of direct reports, as well as utilizing cross-functional and external resources.
- Experience overseeing corporate giving and mass/membership giving campaigns.
- Familiarity with non-profit earned income development is a plus.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and experience with fundraising databases a plus. Knowledge of online giving.
- Substantive knowledge in Green Economy or related areas, along with communications/ media experience at a non-profit public policy organization is desirable.
- Demonstrated skills in budgeting, financial analysis, and revenue forecasting in a multimillion dollar organization. Experience in market analysis, strategy, and management of development campaigns.
- Ability and interest in periodic travel.
- 2-plus years of early-stage business experience as an entrepreneur strongly preferred
- Bachelor’s degree required; M.A. or MBA preferred.
