FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Kansas City, Kan., March 20, 2009) - Applications for job training grants up to $500,000 to help unemployed and underemployed residents of brownfields-impacted communities are being accepted now through April 20. The grants come from a $5 million allocation of Job Training Grants Stimulus funding to EPA, as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

For application guidelines, go to: http://www.epa.gov/brownfields/eparecovery

WHO SHOULD APPLY? Eligible governmental entities and nonprofit organizations should apply to provide environmental job training projects in local communities. Applicants must identify and propose to serve a community that currently receives, or has received, financial assistance (federal, state, or tribal) for brownfields assessment, revolving loan fund, cleanup, site-specific work carried out by state or tribal response programs, and/or targeted brownfields assessments performed directly by EPA. Proposals demonstrating the ability to start projects expeditiously and contribute to the creation and/or preservation of jobs will be evaluated more favorably.

WHY APPLY? EPA's Brownfields program encourages the redevelopment of America’s abandoned and contaminated waste sites. The Job Training Grants Program supports training projects that facilitate job creation in the assessment, remediation or preparation of brownfields sites.

EPA will host four free workshops, each approximately three hours in length, to provide information on job training guidelines and grant proposal requirements:

  • March 25, 1 p.m., Locust Building, 1015 Locust Street, (N.E. Corner of Locust and 11th streets), Suite 1030, St. Louis, Mo.
  • March 26, 1 p.m., National Park Service, Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail, 601 Riverfront Drive, Omaha, Neb.
  • March 27, 1 p.m., EPA Region 7, 901 N. 5th St., Kansas City, Kan.
  • March 31, 1 p.m., Marriott Hotel and Conference Center, 2nd Floor, Wallace Room, 300 E. 9th St., Coralville, Iowa

Applicants must establish procedures to ensure that trained graduates will be employed in "green collar" jobs on brownfields sites and/or environmental work involving the assessment, cleanup, and/or redevelopment of contaminated sites, with a focus on graduates’ respective communities.

Hi, I am from NY and I have been working within the community to steer information to the public about the Recovery Environmental news / update. I also produce a weekly TV program sharing these resources. What I need is more 'actual empowering info' for NYC such as "EPA GRANT for job training on Brownfield sites due 4/20." I also need to know which institution is offering 'education, certified training .'

My goal is to help to include 'poor adults' and or young adult/students to receive training and get green jobs.

I am conducting my first two trainings, a one day session for students in a middle school and a junior high school this Month called, Youth in Tech Designing Solar Energy Car. I insist on illustraing substantive Real Life project to our youths to stimulate them in the Science. It worked for me and I believe that it will make a difference for others. Help me make a difference. Any support appreciated.
