As leaders gather in Rio, a storm is brewing

Fossil fuel companies are poisoning the air we breathe and the water we drink. They’re destroying mountains and forests and displacing communities around the globe. And all the while, they’re breaking world records with their billions of dollars in profits.

They run expensive advertising campaigns to trick us into thinking they’re environmentally-friendly—but nothing could be farther from the truth.

We’ve got to change things. And we can start by exposing polluters and ending taxpayer handouts to oil companies.

On June 18, as world leaders gather in Rio de Janeiro for the UN’s conference on the environment, we want to send them a clear message: It’s time to end fossil fuel subsidies. We’re going to make our voices heard through a twitter storm.

We may even set our own world record. Our goal is to create the most widespread social network message in history. You can add your voice to this chorus—and it will only take a minute. All you have to do is tweet #endfossilfuelsubsidies on June 18.

And just to make sure nobody misses it—we’ll be projecting your tweets in public spaces around the world for everyone to see, starting in Sydney, Australia and ending in Rio, right in front of the world leaders gathered there.

Big polluters may have billions of dollars. But we have something they don’t: The support of people like you. People who are sick of oil companies calling the shots. People who are tired of corporations pretending they’re green while they poison our rivers and oceans, make our kids sick, and destroy our communities. People who know a better world is possible.
