Green The Block is a campaign between Green For All and the Hip Hop Caucus to educate and mobilize low-income communities and communities of color to ensure a voice and stake in the clean-energy economy.
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act includes substantial support to help build the foundation for a green economy. Pending federal climate legislation will deepen that commitment and help position the country at the global forefront of the burgeoning clean energy sector. As our nation undergoes this critical transition, we must make sure that the economic, social and environmental benefits are shared by all communities.
Green The Block Mission
Green The Block seeks to ensure that low-income communities and communities of color have the resources and platforms needed to access the benefits and opportunities of the growing clean-energy economy. The four pillars of the Green The Block campaign are:
- Education and awareness
- Legislative advocacy
- Youth activism
- Private-sector development
The campaign is principled on the foundation that a clean energy economy can address the joint crises of poverty and pollution at the same time. Pollution and poverty hurts everyone, but it hurts low-income and communities of color the most.
The solution is two-fold, just and equitable climate and energy legislation at all levels of government and grassroots efforts to engage and educate the communities that can't afford another gray economy that works for a select few.
The Coalition
Green For All and The Hip Hop Caucus and are co-convening a diverse coalition of national and local organizations to support the principles of Green The Block, elevate successful local and city-wide green economy models, and build awareness and educate communities of color about the social, environmental and economic benefits of going green.
