2nd Runner up (tie):
San Francisco’s Robin Applewood is a 3 time honorable mention in the VH1 songwriting competition. His song “”I Believe,”" is inspired by the Martin Luther King Jr. quote, “”I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right temporarily defeated is stronger than evil triumphant.” Robin expresses his own message of love through consciously crafted lyrics. Themes of pollution and disconnect in society, are complimented by a triumphant and self-empowering, positive vibe. The song features special guest Junior Toots from Jamaica and female Iranian vocalist Sol Atash singing an important message of peace in “”Farsi,”" Iran’s native language. Robin’s song is truly uplifting and the definition of music with a message!
2nd Runner up (tie):
Chris Jobe and his band Nodaway come to us straight out of Nashville TN! Crafting an eclectic sound, Nodaway works in elements of reggae, hip hop and rock to tell their message. For Chris, the opportunity to honor Dr. King was not taken lightly, “So many people were against him and wanted him dead, but he knew what he believed in was true and that he had to keep on fighting. The brilliant thing about Dr. King, was that he promoted nonviolent protest and with this approach he was able to have the most monumental impact on both the 20th and 21st centuries.” With their entry “Love Fight” Nodaway provide a call for unity, while shedding light on issues as broad as pollution, globalization, class discrimination and more. Although touching on serious issues, they know that the message of unity and love is what will bring us forward!
